Walking Dead

Hey guys. I know this has nothing to do with our readings, but I was curious anyway. If any of you are familiar with the comic The Walking Dead, you'll know that there is going to be a TV series of it on AMC. Robert Kirkman, the writer of the comic, is on board for the project. Is anyone looking forward to it as much as I am, or do you think it is going to flop?

  1. Well, just to get the ball rolling, I'll respond. I was never all that into the zombie thing, although I rather like Allred's I, Zombie, for its intriguing ideas.
    But it could be good!
AMC has such a mixed track record on original series. I liked their take on The Prisoner, but I appear to be the only one who did. Mad Men is, of course, going great guns.
Walking Dead has some smart writing, good previews and nice advance press. It could be worthwhile!
We'll start talking about horror comics in class in the next couple weeks. The grotesque aspects of Dick Tracy and Captain America, not to mention Batman, are fascinating, especially in light of those narratives shying away from such material later.

  3. Dick Tracy has some of the best character design in comics, in my opinion. The physical flaws and distinctions in the villains makes the read so much more engaging, particularly moments like Laffy getting lockjaw, Mrs. Pruneface's cook disguise falling off in the pool, etc. And there's a lot of subtle things you can read into the strip, such as all the use of water in the Mrs. Pruneface saga, from the rain at the beginning to the ice death trap to the pool drowning and the onion soup. Perhaps this is all some kind of reference to the fact that she was deformed in a fire escaping during the war. Anyway, I'm looking forward to class!

  4. I have faith in it's goodness. I just do. Also, I heard Kirkman owns a comic publishing company that helps new artists get published...very cool.
